Sustainable Business Council commitment
We are a proud member of the Sustainable Business Council (SBC), an organisation of more than 130 businesses from all sectors, ambitious for a sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand.
The SBC champions its members to be leaders in sustainability and, in doing so, to inspire other businesses to take action too.
Powerco Sustainability Strategic Lead Carol O’Sullivan says the membership allows Powerco to collaborate with a community of like-minded businesses who share our passion for sustainability.
“We want to be proud of the sustainable practices and goals we have, and comfortable to challenge and explore new ways to embed sustainability across our business.”
As part of our SBC membership, we are required to demonstrate our sustainable practices by meeting the SBC member commitments.
This is in addition to Powerco’s own reporting practices. We annually report on our sustainability ambition and our progress towards these goals on our website and through our sustainability report. We also annually report our audited greenhouse gas emissions.
We’re also a member of GRESB, a mission-driven and industry-led organisation, working with global leaders across the infrastructure industry on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Since 2016, we have benchmarked ourselves globally in the GRESB sustainability survey, achieving a five-star rating four times (2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021). For these years, this has put us in the top 20% of companies that have undertaken the survey worldwide. Additionally, within our peer comparison group (electricity distribution network, maintenance and operation), we also achieved a first placing during 2017, 2018, and 2021. Our most recent score in FY23 (reporting on our FY22 performance) achieved a score of 93/100.
“Our SBC and GRESB memberships show our ongoing commitment to improving our sustainability efforts, which touch all areas of our business,” says Carol O'Sullivan.
