Powerco releases first climate-related reports

Powerco is formalising its planning for the impacts of climate change with the release of its first climate-related disclosures report and a climate adaption and resilience plan.

“While we’ve been planning for the impacts of climate change on our business for some time, we’re brought that thinking together holistically for the first time through these new documents as we want to be transparent, proactive and provide reassurance to our customers and stakeholders,” says Powerco GM Corporate Services Jemma Gerring.

The Climate-Related Disclosures Report outlines the challenges and opportunities that a changing climate may have on the way Powerco delivers electricity and gas to customers, while the Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan shows the actions and strategies the business will have in place to manage physical climate risks. It includes the outcomes of regional-wide asset vulnerability assessment using geo-spatial analysis (sea level rise and severe weather events) and investment to support Powerco’s asset management planning.

While these reports are specific to Powerco’s gas and electricity network across its North Island footprint, Powerco is keen to share their thinking in this space and to collaborate with other EDBs, infrastructure owners and councils as together Aotearoa faces the same challenges.

“Recent events like cyclones Gabrielle and Dovi have emphasised the urgency of this work to ensure our assets are resilient to the impacts of a changing climate and we can see the benefits for Aotearoa of collaborating so our work in this area can be aligned. A consistent and joined-up approach will get the best outcomes for all Kiwis,” says Jemma Gerring.

Reporting on climate-related risks and opportunities isn’t mandatory for Powerco, however the Powerco Climate-related Disclosure Report aligns with the Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Standards provided by the External Reporting Board.

“We’re ambitious to see Aotearoa thrive as we respond to a changing climate and creating these documents will help formalise our planning as we transition to a low emission, climate-resilient state,” says Jemma Gerring.

These reports are a coordinated response across our electricity and gas business and our plan to transition to a low emission climate resilient state.

“It’s vital that we anticipate and plan for the impacts of climate change - to ensure our activities help customers mitigate emissions and adapt to a changing climate, that we're resilient to sea level rise and severe weather events and ready for opportunities such as biogas, electrification and smart grids,” says Jemma Gerring.
