New EV charging stations power up New Plymouth

Tuesday, July 16, 2024

More ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) chargers are available on Powerco’s network with the introduction of four new chargers at Z Energy on Courtenay Street in New Plymouth.

"We’re pleased to work with Kwetta on the installation of more EV chargers on our network to help the electrification of Aotearoa,” says Powerco GM Electricity Karen Frew.

Thanks to Kiwi innovators Kwetta, the new EV chargers have not required a capacity upgrade to Powerco’s network to support the extra load EV charging requires.

“The way the units respond to customer needs, network needs and the owner’s requirements without the need for upgrades to the network is exciting technology,” adds Karen Frew.

Using innovative silicon carbide semiconductor technology, the chargers currently deliver ultra-fast 200kW charging to multiple EVs at the same time. They are future-proof and capable of delivering megawatt-scale energy as the heavy vehicle sector begins to electrify. The innovative technology has the smarts to help manage power consumption during periods of high network load

“Our product works alongside the existing network and our technology can look at the demands on the network and vary the power accordingly, minimising the impact on the local power grid, while still delivering fast charging for EV owners,” says Kwetta’s Founder/CGO Mike Lazelle.

The new Z Energy chargers in New Plymouth also include a smaller unit for earlier versions of electric vehicles.

On the Powerco network, Kwetta EV chargers can also be found at Z Energy Waiouru, Masterton and Ngātea where they provide fast, convenient charging for customers on the go.

“We’re pleased to build on our partnership with Powerco and expand the network of EV chargers available for customers in Aotearoa," says Mike Lazelle.

Who is Kwetta
Kwetta, formerly Red Phase, was established in 2021 by three local electrical engineers with world-class experience. Dustin Murdock, Dr Rob Turner and Mike Lazelle set out to provide simple and fast EV charging. Today the Taranaki and Napier-based team is 20-strong and working with EV charger and power grid owners here and in Australia to deploy their innovative technology.
