Electricity upgrade for Waitara
Work begins this month (August) to upgrade the electricity network in Tikorangi, New Plymouth, to ensure customers in Waitara and surrounding areas have reliable electricity now and into the future and to support growth of the area.
The project includes the installation of 2.3km of new underground power cables and the replacement of 1.8km of overhead 33kV power lines with double overhead lines from the Huirangi substation to the intersection of Ngatimaru and Faull roads.
“This work will help ensure the power supply remains reliable now and that there's capacity available as the area continues to grow into the future,” says Powerco General Manager Electricity Karen Frew.
As the area is rich in history and an important site in the New Zealand Wars, Powerco is being supported by Otaraua and Pukerangiora hapū, as well as the New Zealand Archaeological Society.
“We've worked closely with hapū and archaeologists to help plan the best route for this work and appreciate their support as we undertake the construction phase of the project,” says Karen Frew.
While most of the project will take place across farmland, some work will be visible along the roadside of Ngatimaru and Faull roads.
“We’ll be working hard to minimise any disruption to the local community, and we appreciate your patience and co-operation as we carry out this essential work,” says Karen Frew.
The work will be carried out on behalf of Powerco by Northpower and Downer, and is expected to be finished by March 2025.
