Tauranga School Wins Safety Competition
Haley Pickett has won herself and her school a big cash prize by coming up with a catchy safety slogan.
The Year Nine Otumoetai College student was the big winner in Powerco’s Safety Catchphrase competition.
Her slogan: “If a power line is down, don’t hang around,” earned herself $2000 and her school $3000.
The competition was open to all secondary schools within the company’s area of operation, attracting around 130 entries.
Powerco Corporate Affairs Manager Neil Holdom said Otumoetai College submitted the most entries.
“This was a great way for students to learn about keeping safe around our gas and electricity networks. They’ve come up with some very clever slogans.”
He said the best catchphrases would be used in Powerco’s public safety campaign Powercare.
“Safety is Powerco’s top priority and the competition was part of a wider public safety campaign.”
Otumoetai College teacher Kim Beaton encouraged her entire class to enter, earning her a $500 teacher incentive for the most student entries. The school’s science department also used the competition to reinforce electricity safety in classroom lessons.
