Powerco has field staff on standby in preparation for severe weather forecast to strike parts of the North Island over the weekend.

Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast as Cyclone Pam moves closer to the country.

Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said the company was monitoring the situation and had advised contractors to rest their staff in preparation for the severe weather.

“Strong winds are likely to cause power cuts and Powerco’s focus would be to safely restore supply to customers as soon as possible.”

He said people should call Powerco on 0800 272727 for emergencies such as trees in power lines or lines down.

“Downed lines must be treated as live at all times and people should keep clear of them.”

Taranaki had already been affected by severe weather on Thursday evening. Lightning caused multiple power cuts across the region, affecting 4500 customers.

Supply has been restored to all but around 135 customers in South Taranaki. It is expected power to these properties will be back on by the end of the day.

People wanting information about power cuts should go to or call their retailer.
