Storm update 6pm Tuesday

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Powerco has made steady progress restoring power supply despite strong winds causing further damage to parts of Powerco's electricity network.

Around 21,000 properties in Wairarapa, Manawatu, Whanganui and South Taranaki have lost power since severe weather hit the country yesterday morning. Supply has been restored to all but approximately 700 customers, mainly in the Wairarapa.

This afternoon, 11,000 properties in the Coromandel and Waihi Beach areas lost power for around 30 minutes. An additional 750 customers in Katikati had their supply interrupted when a storm ripped down power lines in the township. Supply was restored at 3.50pm.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said trees had caused the majority of the power cuts.

“Many of the power cuts could have been avoided if people had contacted suitably qualified tree trimmers to have their trees cut or trimmed before they caused a problem.”

Mr Marsh said that while Powerco was working hard to get electricity restored to affected properties, there would still be customers without power overnight.

“Residents should contact their retailers and let them know if they are still waiting for the electricity to come back on. While crews are working to get everyone’s supply back on it may be helpful to be pointed to individual properties.”

He urged members of the public to keep clear of any damaged lines and report them to Powerco on 0800 272 727.
