Stay Clear of Downed Power Lines

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Powerco is warning people to stay away from any power lines brought down by strong winds in the Wairarapa overnight.

Gales gusting 120km/h caused power cuts affecting up to 2500 Wairarapa properties overnight with trees and debris tearing down overhead lines and breaking poles.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh urged members of the public to keep clear of any damaged lines and report them to Powerco on 0800 272727.

“Power lines that have fallen to the ground may look safe but they’re very often still live. Live lines can kill. Keep yourselves, your children, pets and livestock well away from any downed lines and call Powerco.”

Mr Marsh said field staff had worked through the night making steady progress in challenging conditions and restored power to 2000 properties.

“There are currently around 500 properties spread around rural parts of Wairarapa without power and we expect to restore the majority of supply by the end of the day, barring more severe weather,” Mr Marsh said.

People with mobile phones with a web browser can save Powerco’s outage and faults page to their favourites for latest information about power cuts and expected restoration times.

Mr Marsh said people wanting further information about power cuts should call their electricity retailer.
