South Taranaki electricity project
A $6m substation at Mokoia is expected to be commissioned before Christmas by electricity distributor Powerco.
The new structure on Meremere Rd south of Hawera replaces one built at Whareroa in the 1970s to supply power to the Kiwi Dairies plant (now Fonterra) and the surrounding rural community.
Powerco’s general manager of Service Delivery and Systems Operation, Ian Skipworth, said the old substation had not supplied the dairy giant since it connected directly to the national grid a number of years ago.
“It continued to supply the surrounding district but its location within the Fonterra complex, was not ideal for us,” he said.
“As well some of the equipment is 50 years old, no longer meets current safety requirements and needs replacing.”
The new Mokoia substation remedies that and enhances the reliability of power supply. Work to be completed includes the laying of a 300m cable that bypasses the old substation and some associated protection work at a second substation.
“All going well Mokoia will be fully operational this side of Christmas and the Whareroa sub will be decommissioned and removed by early March,” he said.
