Powerco wins public safety award
Powerco has been recognised by the electricity industry for its work around public safety.
The company was today named winner of the Electricity Engineers’ Association (EEA) Public Safety Award for 2015.
Powerco’s public safety education programme is designed to get people thinking about electrical safety, with its primary objective to prevent injuries or fatalities caused by contact with Powerco’s network.
The award which comprised a plaque and $500 cheque was presented to Group Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Manager Fiona Ewing at the EEA Conference in Wellington (Thursday).
Mrs Ewing said the public safety campaign focused on third party contractors, the agriculture and horticulture industry, the general public and school children.
“Safety is a top priority for Powerco. The company is committed to protecting the health and safety of all people living and working around its networks.”
She said the campaign involved hard-hitting images and safety messages on billboards and bus backs, attending events such as the national and central district field days, along with an in-school safety campaign featuring a real-life cartoon character called Sparky
“We are thrilled to be recognised for our public safety work. Powerco will be continuing its focus on safety in the future and continuing to develop its campaign to raise awareness of the dangers around electricity and gas networks.”
In announcing the award win, EEA Executive Director Peter Berry said Powerco’s entry was a “very thorough and comprehensive submission which showed the quality and commitment Powerco has made to its public safety”.
