Major Works at Albert Street Intersection
Those heading to Palmerston North's popular Albert Street Market this weekend may want to set off a little earlier due to possible traffic delays.
Traffic at the intersection of Albert and Main Streets will be down to a single lane in places on Saturday, due to the installation of a section of underground cable by electricity distributor Powerco.
Traffic management will be in place from 6am, with contractors working into the night and scheduled to complete the works by Sunday morning.
The work is part of a major upgrade of the central city network that is taking place over the next few years, to ensure a reliable electricity supply into the future.
The first stage, which will see old underground cables replaced with new ones between the Keith Street and Main Street substations, is due to be completed by Christmas.
“Powerco is committed to providing Palmerston North with a reliable electricity supply and is making a significant investment in the city to ensure that the network meets the growing electricity demand for many years to come,” says General Manager Electricity Andrew McLeod.
Excavation work involving major intersections such as this one is carried out on a Saturday to minimise the impact on local businesses and residents, explains Mr McLeod.
“There are lower traffic volumes at the weekend and no rush hour peaks, which means less disruption than if the work was carried out during the week. However we realise it is still an inconvenience and would like to thank those people affected for their patience.”
