Keep clear of downed lines

Monday, November 14, 2016

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake centred near Hanmer Springs early this morning has resulted in power lines falling to the ground.

People must stay well clear of lines and call Powerco’s emergency number on 0800 272 727.

Around 30,000 properties in Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu and Wairarapa lost power when the earthquake struck. Supply has been restored to the majority of affected customers.

Powerco Network Coordination Manager Dean Stevenson said Powerco’s priority was making lines safe.

As well as overhead lines on Powerco’s electricity network, customer service lines have also come down in the earthquake. Service lines, which run from the main network to individual properties, are owned by the land owner.

Field staff may disconnect service lines from the network to keep householders safe. It is then the responsibility of customers to arrange a Powerco approved contractor to make repairs to service lines and connection points.
