Earthquake Causes Power Cuts

Monday, January 20, 2014

This afternoon's earthquake has caused power cuts affecting around 5600 customers on Powerco's electricity network.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said customers in and around Eketahuna, Alfredton, Palmerston North, Fielding and as far north as Manaia in Taranaki were currently without power.

“Powerco has sent field staff to inspect all its substations in the affected area and also to visit sites where we have reports of damage.”

Mr Marsh said Powerco could not provide detailed restoration times until the extent of the damage had been ascertained and said it would be prudent for affected customers to plan to be without power overnight at this stage.

Mr Marsh said communication had been hampered by the loss of cellular phone coverage in the Manawatu but Powerco’s radio communications were unaffected.
