Trees and Power Lines

Cut and trim notice

Please complete this online form if you have received a cut or trim notice.

The trouble with trees

Trees and power lines are a bad combination. In high winds and storms, branches break or trees fall across power lines. It’s a big problem in our network areas.

On average, trees caused a quarter of all power cuts on the Powerco network each year. That means some 70,000 people lost power simply because of poor tree maintenance.

If you see a tree or branch touching power lines, stay away from the tree. Electricity can travel through it. Call Powerco to have it fixed on 0800 769 372.

Planting and trimming

Smaller trees and shrubs are suitable for planting near overhead lines and still provide good shelter. Use plants that do not grow more than 4m high.

Plant tall or spreading trees like avocados and shelter belts well away from power lines. Plant trees well away from buried power cables or gas pipes.

Trim trees regularly to keep them more than 4m from power lines. Government regulations say that if a tree is within 4m of the overhead lines, you must use an approved contractor to have it trimmed.

Approved tree contractors

Powerco has to pay for the first cut in the life of a tree to keep it a safe distance from power lines. From then on, the tree owner is responsible for paying to keep their trees clear of power lines.

Approved contractors fall into two categories. The first one in each list below (underlined) is approved to complete the first cut and any subsequent cuts. The others in each group are approved for any subsequent cuts to the tree.
