Powerco’s customers are the energy retailers who sell gas and electricity to end-users (consumers).
Powerco owns the network that distributes electricity and gas to energy retailers. A number of large scale consumers are also directly connected to Powerco’s network.
The electricity industry reforms produced many changes. Some changes impacted on Powerco’s relationships with consumers. The 1999 legislation prohibited electricity companies from owning a retail company and the physical lines which deliver the electricity to end-users. This change was enforced to bring about competition in the retail electricity market. The change gave individual end users a choice of electricity supplier increasing industry competition and raising standards.
